Role played by the Remote DBA

Huge data is there to manage and manipulate in the large business organizations. A repository where the data is stored and from where the desired data is retrieved is called database. The professionals who are hired to manage the database of an organization are known as database administrators or DBAs. The requirement of DBA in today’s business scenario is growing because most companies are adopting the computer based database approach of managing and filtering the data and so DBA is required for continuous database monitoring.

Whether the company is big or small, database administrators are required. The big size companies can employ a complete team of DBA professionals while the small companies can manage their requirements with just one or two highly skilled database administrators. The next option with these companies is to outsource the task of database monitoring to some specialized remote DBA firms. The database professionals have many functions to perform and most of these functions are listed and explained below.

Disaster Management
The meaning is simple and says that be prepared anytime and every time for disaster. There can be technical failure such as hardware or software failure anytime and there will be the possibility of data loss in the time of technical failure. So to deal with the problem of technical failure, the database administrator should be able to recover data from any loss. Data loss can be saved by taking backup of data regularly. The backup scheme and device is the selection of the DBA.

Analysis of the data in databases
The data is kept in tables in the database. What should be the structure of tables? How the database should be expanded? How to handle the growing data in the database? These questions can be answered by analyzing the data and this is the responsibility of the database administrator.

Security of the database
The DBA has to take care of many things from the security point of view. What are the different views created on the database? What permission should be given to which types of users to access the database? When the permission should be granted and in which conditions the read or write permission should be revoked? The answers of all these questions are the decisions of the database administrator or DBA. A good DBA effectively manages all these security issues and make sure that neither unauthorized access is given to any user nor any read/write permission is allowed to an outsider. In short, a good DBA acts as the security guard for the database against all the illegal types of read/write access.

Cost of the database
Regular database maintenance requires some cost and this cost can be reduced if the DBA knows how to fit everything in budget. So doing everything in budget is another responsibility of the DBA.

A professional or the group of professionals who can perform all the above functions effectively should be employed to administer the database. Alternatively to make things easier and more secure, you can also outsource the entire task to a specialized remote DBA.
