In November 2024 during Maharashtra’s Group A match against Services, controversy erupted after Ankit was given out by the umpire. Ankit was not satisfied with the umpire’s decision and refused to leave the pitch which delayed the ongoing match for 15 minutes. With no Decision Review System (DRS) available as the match was livestreamed rather than televised, Bawne was unable to challenge the umpire’s decision. Finally, after match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni’s intervention, the match resumed. Ankit was banned for one match by the BCCI for showing dissent. • Age-discrepancy issue
In 2011, Ankit was dropped from the India U19 team after his age in the BCCI database and the age on his passport did not match. He was set to lead the India U19 team in a four-nation tournament that year and the 2012 Under-19 Cricket World Cup before being dropped. Ankit in his defence said that the confusion happened because the agent who made his passport messed up the date. The BCCI did not punish Ankit but did not pick him for the World Cup as they did not want to take any risks in an ICC tournament. [2]The Indian Express
