- Claudia Goldin belongs to a Jewish family in The Bronx, New York.
- Since an early age, she aspired to become an archaeologist; however, after reading The Microbe Hunters (1927) by Paul de Kruif during her junior high school, she aspired to become a bacteriologist.
- During her high school, Claudia attended a summer school course in microbiology at Cornell University.
