- Cody Johnson belongs to a musically inclined family and learned to play various musical instruments from his father at a young age.
- He initially performed at his church and with amateur music bands in his school.
- At 14, he began bull riding and was trained by a vocational agricultural (vo-ag) instructor, Mr Larry Fortenbury, who later became one of his life mentors. His career goal then was to participate in the National Finals Rodeo (a rodeo competition by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association or PRCA).
