In 2013, Kamala hit the headlines after she ordered the arrest of a couple on the charges of truancy (prolonged absence of child from school). Later, investigations revealed that the couple’s child could not attend school regularly as she was suffering form sickle cell anemia which needed her to be hospitalised regularly. For her acts, Kamala received a lot of criticism.
Challenging Release of an Innocent Person
Kamala received criticism after she filed a petition in a court in California against the release of a man named Daniel Lawrence, who had been wrongfully imprisoned by the law enforcement agencies since the last 27 years.
Criticised for Handing Out Brutal Punishments for Small Crimes
As District Attorney of San Francisco and Attorney General of California, Kamala has often been criticised because of her methods of dealing with small criminals. She once called for a maximum prison sentence against marijuana smokers. However, her stance changed later when she backtracked on her early demands and claimed “nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed.”
