- Max began his professional football career in 1992 with his hometown club TSV Reinbek.
- Max was part of the Germany U-19 team that competed at the UEFA U-19 Championship in 2007.

- While playing for FC St. Pauli, Max scored 13 goals and recorded six assists in the 2. Bundesliga during the 2011-12 season. He helped the club finish in fourth position in the league missing out on the promotion playoffs on goal difference.
- Max scored his first international goal for Germany against the United States in Washington, D.C. on 2 June 2013.
- Besides football, Max also likes to play poker and in June 2014 he came third out of 241 players at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

- In June 2020, Max left Fenerbahçe after he terminated his contract with the club due to unpaid salary.
- Max met his wife Dilara after his move to 1. FC Union Berlin. During the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, He proposed to Dilara live on television after the match finished. Although Dilara was not present in the match, she replied to it on Instagram with “Yes!”
- Max and the club VfL Wolfsburg mutually decided to terminate the remaining contract in November 2022. He then joined the German second-division club SC Paderborn 07. There also his contract was terminated by the club in a mutual decision after which he took retirement from professional football.
- In 2024, Max accused the Berlin police authority of racism after a police check at his wife Dilara’s home.
- Max appeared in the 12th season of the German reality show ‘Promi Big Brother’ in October 2024 aired on Sat.1 TV channel. He participated in a reality show for the first time although his wife was a contestant in the show last year as well.
