  • In August 1990, Miguel’s mother was kidnapped by a drug gang on the orders of Pablo Escobar, a drug lord and narcoterrorist, who planned it to pressure the government to stop sending criminals to the U.S.
  • Miguel’s mother was kept for five months and was accidentally shot by police during a rescue on 25 January 1991.
  • At 26, Miguel entered politics by winning a seat on Bogotá’s city council with the Liberal Party. He soon became known for his independent leadership style.
  • In 2014, Uribe was elected Council President with 32 out of 45 votes. He became the youngest person ever to hold the position in Bogotá.

  • Following the shooting, a gunfight started between Miguel Uribe’s security guards and the attacker, which injured the suspect and two other people.
  • Authorities arrested a suspect under 15 years old, and on the same day, Defence Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez announced a reward of 3 billion Colombian pesos (about USD 729,000) for information leading to others involved.
