Some Lesser Known Facts About Nima Rinji Sherpa

• Nina Rinji Sherpa wanted to become a footballer in childhood.

• Nima Rinji comes from a family of record-holding mountaineers who also now run Nepal’s largest mountaineering expedition company.

• Nima Rinji Sherpa got interested in becoming a mountaineer after seeing his father who is a record holder himself.

• Initially, Nima had a passion for photography of the mountains but seeing his father’s achievements in mountaineering made him fall into it as well. His father holds the record for climbing Mount Everest which is the world’s highest peak without bottled oxygen at the age of 19 and becoming the youngest climber to do so.

• He belongs to the ethnic community of Sherpas and the word ‘Sherpa’ is commonly used to describe someone who is a mountain guide or porter working in the Everest area. In fact the name of an ethnic group of people who live in the mountains of Nepal.

• Another reason why he decided to become a professional mountaineer is that he realised that the people from his community of Sherpas are always the ones who are in the shadows of international athletes by backing them up.

• Nima Rinji aims to prove to the younger generation of Sherpas that they can rise above the stereotype of being only support climbers and embrace their potential as top-tier athletes, adventurers, and creators.

• On 30 September 2022, Nima started climbing at 16 with Mt Manaslu which is the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 metres. He had just passed his class 10 examination when he climbed the mountain.

• In May 2023, he scaled Mount Everest (8848.86m) and Mount Lhotse (8516m) in a span of 10 hours, at just the age of a little over 17.

• In June 2023, Nima became the youngest to climb the ninth-highest mountain Nanga Parbat (8125m).

• Nima went on to climb Mt Gasherbrum I (8068m), Mt Gasherbrum II (8035m), Mt Broad Peak (8047m), and Mt K2 (8,611m) in July 2023 while he reached the peak of Mt Cho-Oyu (8188m) in October 2023.

• He then went to Pakistan and climbed five major 8,000-meter mountains within one month.

• In 2023, at the age of 17, Nima Rinji climbed nine peaks above 8,000 meters in just a single year.

• In 2024, he reached the top of Mt Annapurna I (8091m) which was his first 8000er summit without supplemental oxygen in April and the top of Mt Makalu (8485m) in May.

• In October 2024, Nima Rinji Sherpa reached the summit of the 14th-highest mountain in the world Mountain Shishapangma (8,027 metres) in Tibet, China which made him the youngest person in the world to summit all 14 of the planet’s 8,000-metre peaks.

• Nima and his partner Pasang Nurbu Sherpa reached the summit of the Shishapangma which is at 8,027 meters above sea level shortly after 6:00 am (China Standard Time) which is 3.30 am in Indian Standard Time (IST).

• After setting a record, Nima made an official statement saying
  

  This summit is not just the culmination of my journey but a tribute to every Sherpa who has dared to dream beyond the traditional boundaries set for us. Mountaineering is more than labour; it is a testament to our strength, resilience, and passion.”

• Before Nima, his uncle and mountaineer Mingma Gyabu Sherpa held the record for being the youngest to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres which he achieved in 2019 at the age of 30. In October 2024, Nima Rinji Sherpa broke his uncle’s record.

• His accomplishment is his vision for the ‘SherpaPower’ initiative which aims to reshape the global perception of Sherpas.

• After his accomplishment in 2024, Nima Rinji Sherpa was quoted saying in an interview that
  

  Sherpas are not just mountain guides but elite athletes and adventurers capable of creating unique paths on the world stage.”

• During the process of his mountain climbing, Nima Rinji Sherpa chooses to climb the first 7,000 meters without any oxygen support.
