  • Pathum Nissanka’s father, Sunil Silva, played cricket during his teenage days, but never played cricket as his parents did not allow him.
  • Sunil wanted a son who could become a cricketer, so he was happy when Pathum was born. His name, Pathum, means hope.
  • As the young child turned a few years old, he taught him the basics of cricket. Sunil was a groundsman of Kalutara Town Club, hence Pathum played for the club team.

  • His mother used to sell flowers at the local Kalutara Bodhiya temple to make ends meet for the family.
  • Later, as he grew, the money problem made it difficult for him to play cricket professionally. But he joined the Kalutara Vidyalaya where he trained under the coach Sunil Saluwadana, who also trained Tillakaratne Dilshan.
  • His name grew in the area when he scored a double century with 205 runs in 190 balls against President’s College, Rajagiriya in the  School Cricket Championship.
  • Later, Pradeep Nishantha, the coach of Isipathana College, signed him up for school. He also arranged a sponsorship for the young boy through his friend, Nilantha, an employee at Jayaratne Florists.
  • Sunil Silva later became the junior coach of Holy Cross College, Kalutara.
  • When Pathum Nissanka scored a century on his test debut, Jayaratne Florists gave him Rs 2,50 lakh as an allowance.

  • In the 2nd innings of his debut test match, he scored 103 runs, becoming the 4th Sri Lankan player to score a century on debut and the first to score a century away from home on debut.
  • He chose jersey number 18 as his birthday falls on 18 May.
  • Pathum Nissanka played the 2021 T20 World Cup held in United Arab Emirates (UAE), he scored 221 runs in 8 matches at an average of 27.63 and a strike rate of 117.55. He also scored his 1st T20I half-century with 61 runs against Ireland.

  • On 19 June 2022, he scored his ODI hundred with 137 runs in 147 balls against Australia in R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
  • In the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, he scored 332 runs in 9 matches at an average of 41.50 and a strike rate of 89.49.
  • In 2023, he was the first Sri Lankan batsman to score 1000 ODI runs.
  • On 9 February 2024, he became the first Sri Lankan batsman to score an ODI double century with 210 runs not out against Afghanistan.

  • In the 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL) auction, he was acquired by the Jaffna Kings for his base price of US $40,000 and later won the 2024 LPL Trophy.

  • In May 2024, he signed the upgraded central contract with Sri Lanka Cricket.
  • On 16 October 2024, he scored 25 runs in an over of Shamar Joseph during a T20I against West Indies.
