  • Sanjoy Roy belongs to a Bengali family in Kolkata.
  • He is a trained boxer.
  • In 2019, he started working as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. Civic volunteers assist the police in various kinds of work such as traffic control and disaster management but do not enjoy the benefits available to police personnel.
  • Later, he worked at the Police Welfare Cell in Kolkata and was assigned to the R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital outpost, which granted him access to all the hospital department rooms.
  • According to sources he was involved in a racket within the hospital. He used to take bribes and extort money from patients by promising to provide beds for them.

  • According to sources, CCTV footage was found where he was seen entering the emergency building of R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital at 4 am on the day of the incident, wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck. After that, he was seen leaving the building without the device which was later found by the investigators near the victim’s body. This made him a major suspect in the crime.
  • On 10 August 2024, he was arrested by the Kolkata police and was under 14-day judicial custody.
  • According to sources, the investigators found disturbing and violent adult film clips on his mobile phone.
  • Later, he confessed to his crime and told the police officials to hang him if they wanted.
  • Thereafter, the officers found that he had a history of violent behaviour against his wives and often abused them under the influence of alcohol.
  • According to sources, when his mother Malati Roy was asked about his behaviour and the case, she claimed that he was innocent and the police had framed him to confess to the crime.
  • Thereafter, his sister who works as an assistant sub-inspector at the Kolkata police department disowned him and demanded to give him the harshest possible punishment for his crime if found guilty.
  • Later, the sister of his late wife claimed that her sister was kicked in the stomach by him when she was 3 months pregnant, which led to the death of her unborn child.
  • According to sources some of his neighbours claimed that he always told them that he worked with the Kolkata Police’s battalion which they found hard to believe. They also said that he had taken money from some people promising them police jobs.
  • On 13 August 2024, the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee ordered the Kolkata police to solve the case by 18 August 2024 Sunday if not solved by then the case would be handed over to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) department.
  • Thereafter, junior doctors at government hospitals from Kolkata and Delhi held protests over the case, demanding immediate action and justice from the government.

  • On 14th August 2024, a team of senior CBI officers from Delhi were assigned to investigate the case. Sanjoy was handed over to them by the Kolkata police and was taken to SSKM Hospital for medical tests.
