Some Lesser Known Facts About Vijaya Bharti
- Vijaya Bharti was born and brought up in a poor family in Jamalpur, Bihar.
- Since childhood, she was interested in singing, and she started singing at the age of two and a half years. At the age of 10, she started performing on stage.
- During singing practice, Vijaya used to go to a friend’s house in her village and practice singing along with a harmonium. However, she did not have money to buy a harmonium. She then started giving tuition to the children in her village to buy a harmonium.
- Initially, the people in her village opposed her decision to become a singer. They said that she was a Brahmin girl, and she should not sing in public. However, singing was her passion, so, she ignored people’s comments on her. Her parents also opposed her decision. However, gradually her parents understood her decision and supported her in making her career as a singer.
- At the age of 13, she sang a song for a radio show for the first time. After this, she started singing for the Bihar Doordarshan Channel.
- Her parents got her married when she was 14 years old. After a year, she became a mother. During her graduation exams, her in-laws locked her in a room for eight days because they said that girls should only do household work. Gradually, they started controlling her life, and later, she broke her marriage.
- Her first husband used to beat her and keep her in the room where goats were tied. After living there for a few years, in 1991 she left that house with her daughter. For earnings, she started working as a music teacher in a college. Her husband continued torturing her threatening her. Once her husband even fed her poison.
- Her first TV appearance was for the TV channel Bhagalpur Doordarshan.
- She received her singing training under Mishra Bandhu, Amar Nath Mishra, and Pashupati Nath Mishra of Varanasi.
- She was one of the toppers of her college and received a scholarship for the same.
- She qualified the Union Public Service Commission exam in 1989. She was selected as a television executive in folk music and classical music under UPSC.
- She then met the news anchor Onkareshwar Pandey. Initially, they became good friends and later, fell in love with each other. In 1994, she married Onkareshwar Pandey, and in 1995, she moved from Bihar to Delhi with her family.
- She then lent her voice to the Bhojpuri Chhath song in Angika and Maithili language for T-Series Music Company.
- Vijaya Bharti first auditioned in Akashvani Bhagalpur, Bihar along with 283 people and was selected.
- She judged the reality TV show “Bhauji N. 1 Season 4” aired on Mahua TV Channel in 2012.
- Vijaya Bharti is an artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). She did stage programs in France, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Holland, and Scotland under ICCR in 2003.
- She has lent her voice to songs of more than 18 languages including Bhojpuri, Maithili, Angika, Awadhi, Hindi, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Gwalpariya, Gujarati, and Marathi.
- On 5 October 2019, one of her poetry books “Rang Piya Ka Sohna” was released.
- In 2020, she received “Corona Yoddha Samman” from the Indian government for entertaining people through television during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- On 8 July 2022, the Adiraj School of Dance honoured her with “Adiraj Guru Samman.”
- In 2022, she received a Certificate of Excellence.
