  • Anar Patel was born and grew up in a humble family of scholars and educators in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • Her mother, Anandiben Patel, was the first woman Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2014 and has been serving as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh since July 2019. She is also the first woman governor of the state.

  • Influenced by her elder brother and parents, Anar was a was a studious child since younger age.
  • Because of her curious nature and analytical thinking, she chose Science for her 11th and 12th grades. She completed her higher secondary education at CU Shah School, where her interest in analysis and logical thinking became stronger. Her love for mathematics led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad.
  • Along with her academic achievements, she was actively involved in sports and represented Gujarat in the State Hockey Championship.
  • Inspired by her parents and father-in-law, Anar started social work in the early 1990s.
  • After completing her studies at St. Xavier’s College, Anar Patel, along with her husband Jayeshbhai Patel and a friend, Virenbhai Joshi, founded the non-profit organisation Manav Sadhana in 1994, an organisation that focuses on providing value-based education to help underprivileged children build a better future.
  • As of 2026, Manav Sadhana runs 41 projects through 82 preschools, 6 community centres, and 7 supported centres. The organisation works in many areas such as education, youth empowerment, women’s empowerment, senior care, nutrition, health and hygiene, and livelihoods. Through its programs, thousands of people receive health support every year, and more than 1,000 people are provided with meals daily.
  • In 1995, along with her mother, Anar co-founded Gramshree Women Empowerment, which helps the marginalized women gain skills and income-earning opportunities.
  • For the past 20 years, Gramshree has been providing training to these women to become self-reliant through sustainable income-generating opportunities and activities, such as handicrafts. A case study on Gramshree’s empowerment of women artisans is also published by the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

  • After the 2001 earthquake, Gramshree and Manav Sadhna adopted five badly affected border villages. Anar and her team also lived in Kutch for over eight months, arranging food and shelter for local people. They also worked on clean-up drives, awareness programs, rebuilding infrastructure, and education, even though she faced criticism for choosing disturbed areas.
  • During her time in Kutch, she noticed beautiful handmade art on the walls of rebuilt homes and realized that rural women had great talent, but they had no platform to sell their work. This inspired her to show local crafts across Gujarat, and in 2007, she started Craftroots to help rural artisans reach wider markets. The first Craftroots exhibition was held in 2008 in Ahmedabad, and since then, the initiative has supported thousands of local artists.

  • In 2016, Anar conceptualized India’s first five-day city festival, The Sabarmati Festival, to celebrate the cultural diversity and inclusive spirit of Ahmedabad. In its first edition, the festival gave a platform to more than 10,000 artists through pre-events and main events, making it a record-setting cultural program. In its first two editions, the festival attracted around 2 million visitors, and the second edition was held in January 2018.
  • Along with doing social work, Anar holds a directorial position in various organisations, including Reignjayana LLP, Gramshree Hastakala Producer Company Limited, Gramshree Tribel Cluster Producer Company Limited, Anar Project Private Limited, Gramshree – Women Empowerment, and Gramshree Hastakala Foundation.
  • She also serves as a trustee and mentor to organizations in Ahmedabad, such as YUVA Unstoppable, ESI – Environmental Sanitation Institute, and Moved by Love.
  • In January 2026, Anar Patel was appointed as the President of the Khodaldham Trust, a significant socio-religious organisation of the Leuva Patidar community. In an interview, an official of the Khodaldham Trust said Anar has been appointed to a new post created in the organisation. He added,

So far, the organisation had no president. We have a total of 11 zones in the state and the convener of each zone will now report to Anar Patel. Basically, she will handle the organisation’s affairs across the state. Nareshbhai will continue to head the Khodaldham Trust as chairman.”

  • Anar Patel’s husband, Jayesh Patel, is the son of Late Padma Shri Ishwarbhai Patel, who is known as “Mr. Toilet” and “Toilet Man of India.” He is the President of the Harijan Sevak Sangh in Gujarat and Chairman and the managing trustee of the Sabarmati Harijan Ashram Trust in Ahmedabad.
