- Umesh was drawn to theatre from very early on: at age 4 and he joined the theatre troupe led by K. Hirannaiah.
- Later, he became part of the troupe of legendary theatre-figure Gubbi Veeranna, where he honed his acting skills.
- It was in one such stage plays that the then assistant director Puttanna Kanagal noticed him and recommended his name to B. R. Panthulu’s next film.
- In 1976, he appeared in the film Katha Sangama, where his portrayal as Thimmarayi earned widespread acclaim.
- Some of his popular films includes Nagara Hole (1978), Guru Shishyaru (1981), Anupama (1981), Kaamana Billu (1983), Apoorva Sangama (1984), Shruthi Seridaaga (1987), Golmaal Radhakrishna (1990), Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare (1993), and Venkata in Sankata (2007).
